Gingee Day Trip Snapshot
Gingee Fort is located 38 km east of Tiruvannamalai along the highway to Tindivanam (45 minutes by car). Open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, it features the steep Rajagiri Fort with its wooden drawbridge and the eight-storey Kalyan Mahal. Start early in the morning to climb before the midday sun.
Historical Marvel: The Troy of the East
Constructed initially in the 9th century by the Cholas and later massively fortified by the Vijayanagara Nayaks, Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji, and the Mughals, Gingee was famously hailed by Shivaji as the most impregnable fortress in India.
Climbing Tips for Visitors
- Footwear: Wear comfortable trekking shoes with good grip on steep granite steps.
- Water & Sun Protection: Carry at least 1–2 liters of water per person, a hat, and sunglasses as there are no shops inside the upper citadel.
- Photography: The view from the top of Rajagiri over the arid plains and mountain ramparts is spectacular.
