Festival Overview
Karthigai Deepam is the premier annual festival of Tiruvannamalai, celebrated over 10 days in the Tamil month of Karthigai (November/December). The highlight occurs on the 10th evening at 6:00 PM when the Maha Deepam flame is lit atop the 2,668-foot peak of Mount Arunachala, drawing over 2 million devotees.
The Significance of the Cosmic Fire
Karthigai Deepam commemorates Lord Shiva appearing as the boundless pillar of fire (Jyotirlinga) to enlighten the cosmos. Lighting the holy cauldron on the peak symbolizes the triumph of divine light over ignorance and ego.

- Dwajarohanam (Flag Hoisting): Marks the formal beginning of Brahmotsavam.
- Vahana Processions: Daily morning and night processions of the five deities around the temple mada streets.
- Maha Ther (Day 7): The monumental wooden temple chariot is pulled around the town by thousands of joyous devotees.
- Bharani Deepam & Maha Deepam (Day 10): At dawn (4:00 AM), the Bharani Deepam is lit inside the inner sanctum. At dusk (6:00 PM), the holy flame erupts atop the summit of Arunachala amidst deafening chants of "Annamalaiyarukku Arohara!".
